I Hate Starbuck’s New Seasonal Release – 2016 Edition – Spontaneity backfired

On February 16 2016, Starbucks announced that they are coming out with two new seasonal offerings: Smoked Butterscotch Latte and Teavanna Citrus Green Tea Latte. And since one of my 2016 goals is to be more spontaneous, instead of getting my usual Venti Cool Lime Refresher with Light Ice that is only 90 calories, I went for the GRANDE(mistake already) Teavanna Citrus Green Tea Latte, 260 calories – unfortunately my spontaneity backfired…

First of all, I’d like to preface the story with the fact that I really don’t hate Starbucks’ regular Green Tea Latte, in fact, I can say that I enjoy it. Generally, I’m not a big fan of a lot of Starbucks’ hot drinks because of how thick they are. It almost feels like I’m drinking foam and cream instead of liquid, especially when I’m drinking the mochas or lattes. But since Chicago is being Chicago, I decided to go for the hot drink and test out the new Teavanna Citrus Green Tea Latte. I also mistakenly went with Grande because I’ve had good experiences with the regular Green Tea Lattes, plus I was thirsty (in multiple ways ;)).

Instead of listing the ingredients out for you, here’s what Starbucks had to say:

“Shade-grown, micro-ground full leaf green tea is sweetened with a citrus mint syrup, crafted with hand frothed steamed milk, then finished with a sprinkling of lemon essence. A sweet, creamy, lemony variation of the classic green tea latte.”

My first sip was difficult. Of course the coffee burnt my lips (I should have known after the wave of hot drink lawsuits in the last few years). The worst part is not even the hotness, it was the aftertaste. Instead of tasting like green tea or crème, the after taste was more of a kale feel. But I’m not the kind of girl who will give up the first time someone/thing fails me, so I went for it once more. I was punished yet again for my stubbornness, because my second sip did not improve…

I tricked my friend into trying a sip and what I got from him was “yeah… that’s difficult” – Kevin.

I continued my treacherous journey back home with my new hot basic Bae in my hands thinking that it was going to get better. AND IT DID. After getting home, my burning hot tea was already lukewarm (thanks -100 degree Chicago). And in fact, the lukewarm Teavanna Citrus Green Tea Latte was not bad! I had my tea along with Toppers Pizza (if you don’t know what this is, please do check it out). But WHO IN THEIR RIGHT MINDS WOULD EVER ENJOY A LUKE WARM ANYTHING?! The pain was excruciating and I eventually threw away my drink with more than half of it left.

I can’t vouch for the Smoked Butterscotch Latte (or at least not yet 😉 – I’ll be back with more), but I can definitely say that the Teavanna Citrus Green Tea is better COLD. I did learn an important lesson – Never try a new Starbucks drink with any size bigger than Tall. You’ll feel even worse when it’s a let-down.
