It’s official – queen and powerhouse Michelle Obama has teamed up with equally queen and powerhouse Oprah Winfrey to host a summit on Monday, June 14, 2016, consisting of seminars, presentations and workshops for the kick-ass feminist. Along with her kick-ass lady crew celebrating other kick-ass women, the White House Summit is designed to recognize what the female counterpart has achieved and what the female counterpart will achieve when we push our way into gender equality. Addressing six issues affecting America’s women today – Economic Empowerment, Health and Wellness, Educational Opportunity, Violence Against Women, Entrepreneurship and Innovation, and Leadership and Civic Engagement – the goal is to “highlight key issues affecting women and girls and best practices to carry on into the future.”
Of course, it wouldn’t be Michelle Obama unless she brought in a few of her #fab, (not to mention impossibly influential) friends. The promo video, released this past Monday, features notable women, with a few Hollywood appearances: Oprah, Shonda Rhimes, Meryl Streep, Tina Fey, Kerry Washington, and Cecile Richards to name a few.
“Today, we change tomorrow… We are the United State of Women, and we stand stronger when we stand together.”
Unsurprisingly, those speaking at the summit themselves are also very, very notable women who have achieved and who do very, very critical things. From the president of Planned Parenthood to the first female NFL coach to Amy frickin’ Pohler, the list of who’s attending and who’s making appearances is sure to create quite the stir. So what can we expect? To kick off possibly the largest and most influential women’s summit since Seneca Falls, here are a few faces to look out for tomorrow:
SUE ELLEN ALLEN / REINVENTION, an ex-inmate whose view of prison life from the inside and work on the outside has created a program that influenced and influences inmate transition upon penitentiary exit
SANA AMANAT / MARVEL, director, editor, and co-creater of Marvel’s first Muslim character, Kamala Khan – Ms. Marvel
NELY GALÁN / SELF MADE, dubbed “Tropical Tycoon” to her hermanas latinas, independent producer and former President of Entertainment for Telemundo. Creator and executive producer at FOX
ALISON GOPNIK / DEVELOPMENT, professor at UC Berkeley, columnist for The Wall Street Journal, New York Times feature, Charlie Rose and Colbert Report feature, the most prominent of researchers in her field of cognitive psychology and development of infants
PIPER KERMAN / ORANGE IS THE NEW BLACK, author and memoirist of Netflix’s most-watched original series, current VP at Spitfire Strategies, a Washington-based nonprofit, 2014 recipient of the Justice Trailblazer Award
AMY POEHLER / SMART GIRLS, bae.
MELANIE WHELAN / SOULCYCLE, CEO and entrepreneur, Fortune’s 40 under 40, babe (who navigated her company through not only its IPO but also its expansion) with a plan and a damn nice bod
CHRIS WHITE / DARPA, principal researcher at Microsoft, inventor of the U.S. government’s Defense Advance Research Projects Agency (DARPA), casually countered terrorist financing and supported in a combat environment @ Afghanistan, recipient of the 2015 Secretary of Defense Medal for Outstanding Public Service
And with the most recent news of a convicted rapist getting off with a mere tsk, we need this summit more than ever; women deserve the definitive right to active protection and control of all aspects of their health, whether economic, mental, or physical.
